Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Heather's father worked in construction, which caused him to unknowingly come home with asbestos fibers on his clothing. This is what caused the second-hand exposure that lead to Heather's cancer. Due to a long latency period, she was not diagnosed with mesothelioma until she was 36 years old and starting a family.
